We enjoy television. That’s just the way it is and we refuse to pretend anymore. For some reason, everybody likes to lie about their TV time. There are a few shows that you can watch with impunity but they’re few and far between.
Game of Thrones– no problem. In fact, you rack up more cool points for being in the know on that one.
If you’re a woman, Scandal is a safe bet too. Men like to deny watching it since that soap opera turn a couple of seasons ago. The kidnapping ordeal was the tipping point.
Depending upon your circle of friends, the catch all category of performance based beauty pageants can’t get you into any self-esteem crushing episodes of peer inflicted mockery.
Once a show becomes popular enough to generate water cooler banter, you’re in the clear.
Netflix is different. Streaming carries no stigma.
Let’s be honest. For every 5 people that you know, who say things like, Oh, I almost never watch television, 3 of them are bold faced liars.
These are the shows that we find too compelling to miss and we honestly don’t have much time to watch TV.
The New Shows
Notorious- ABC Thursday 9 pm.
We weren’t drawn in by the first episode. We were ready to snub it, but for some reason we hit the button to record new episodes.
The network news producer and the criminal defense attorney have the smoldering chemistry that’s fun to watch. The story lines are good, not great. The characters are the special sauce that will bring you back for more.
Designated Survivor – ABC, Wednesday 10 pm
We’ve discussed this one before. It’s great. There have been too many scheduling conflicts for this show to really take off yet. After 3 episodes, it was preempted. After the fourth episode, it was preempted again. This week, the fifth episode will air. There’s time to catch up. You won’t regret it.
This is us- Tuesday 9pm NBC
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Those demons at NBC rooked us. We hate touchy feely gibberish. We detest entertainment that requires a hanky. We love this show though. The very first episode lured us in.
Westworld – HBO Sunday 9pm
This show is guaranteed to be a huge success. It is without question the best new show of the season. Don’t let the title fool you. We did and we almost avoided some first rate television. We generally have a zero tolerance policy for westerns. We find them irritating.
Westworld is not your standard western. It’s based on a Michael Crichton novel. (aka the guy who brought you Jurassic Park) A high end vacation resort mimics the Wild West and it’s filled with a collection of androids, programmed to maximize the guest’s enjoyment of the facility. They are incapable of remembering the past and committing any act of aggression towards any living thing. At least, that’s the theory. There are several major plot lines running consecutively and they are all exciting. The cast is spectacular and the scenery is fantastic.
Watch one episode and you’ll be hooked.
Good Behavior- TNT Tuesday 9pm
This one officially starts next Tuesday but the premiere is available on demand. It’s an interesting show about a thief and an assassin who develop a relationship. It’s a dark show but it’s thoroughly engrossing. As usual, TNT uses its cable status to skirt the lines of impropriety. This one’s not for the kiddies. Grow ups will love it though.
Quantico is back on Sunday nights at 10pm on ABC. After the debacle of the second half of season one, it’s back on point. Delectable!
How to Get Away with Murder -Thursday 10pm ABC.
This one is a treat. If you’ve never seen it, start from the beginning. It’s good.
Survivor- Wednesday 8pm CBS
It’s an oldy but a goody. We love the cast of characters who suffer for our entertainment. Clearly, they’re all seeking fame which makes their torment even more enjoyable. Every so often, one of them is even likable. It’s a guilty pleasure but we all have our weaknesses.
The Blacklist- NBC Thursday 9pm
It’s a rather generic action adventure spy show in theory but for some reason this one is special. The characters are complex and rich. Sometimes you love them. Occasionally you hate them. You always want to see what will happen next. If you’ve never seen this one, you need to start at the beginning. You will be lost if you don’t. The style is generic but the plot is quite unique. This is one of the network’s finest. You will enjoy it.
